This page is a log of modem speeds on web•Wiz's home phone line. web•Wiz uses an Autralian modem, a SwannSmart 56K, with Windows XP certified drivers installed.

The table shows date and time of connecting, connection speed as reported by Windows, the result of a speed test done at BandwidthPlace, the time taken to download a 1 Megabyte file at this speed, and the time the connection was lost (if applicable).

The unit for modem speed is kilobits per second, abbreviated as Kbits/sec more often than not (1 kilo = 1024). Note that is a different measurement than given, for example, when downloading a file - this speed is measured as Kilobytes per second, abbreviated as KB/sec. Traditional computer units measure 8 bits per byte where 1 Kilobyte = 1024 bytes.

Legend:

• Connect: speed reported by Windows when connection made. Measured in Kb/sec. Thus, a value of 31.2 is actually 31,200 bits/second.
• Test: Speed of the connection reported by Bandwidthplace's test. Measured in Kb/sec. Will be different to connection speed because, after connection, the two modems decide on a speed with which they can communicate according to the phone line condition without loss of data.
• 1 Mb download: Time taken, in minutes, for a 1 Megabyte file to be downloaded. For comparison purposes, a reasonable broadband connection would enable a 5 Megabyte file to be downloaded in 1 minutes.
• Drop out: If the connection dropped out because of a poor line, this is the time at which it occurred.
