webDotWiz Olympics News | Sports A-M | Sports N-Z

  Pentathlon (U.I.P.M.)
  • Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne et Biathlon. Currently, under the General section of the site, there's a list of former Olympic competition medal winners, both individuals and teams. There's also a list of qualifiers for Sydney 2000 but no other Olympic news at present.
  Rowing (F.I.S.A.)
  • Fédération Internationale de Sociétés d'Aviron. Under the Latest Media feature at the International Rowing Federation's site is a profile of Australia's, James Tomkins. The World Championships began July 31 in Zagreb, Croatia, so watch for results. The site also has profiles of prominent competitors.
  Sailing (I.S.A.F.)
  • International Sailing Federation. Sailing is possibly the most regulated sport at the Olympics and requires very sophisticated scoring. As well, there are plenty of rules and regulations for competitors and officials to be familiar with. The I.S.A.F. has made available copious amounts of official documentation (downloadable in PDF format) and there is general information, such as about the results system. It's certainly worth visiting the write-up of how the scoring will be carried out, if only to see about 300 PCs stacked to the roof. Remember to visit the Australian Yachting Federations' site, too, at www.yachting.org.au.
  Shooting (I.S.S.F.)
  • International Shooting Sport Federation. At last visit, the site has the results from the World Cup, biographies for the Olympics 2000 competitors are being prepared and there's a Live on Air section.
  Soccer (F.I.F.A.)
  • Fédération Internationale de Football Association. Scroll down the F.I.F.A. homepage until you find the Sydney 2000 link on the left for Olympic Soccer news. You can look at the draw, schedule, standings for both men and women teams and catch up on the latest news. The Olyroos play Italy in the first round and the Matildas meet Germany.
  Softball (I.S.F.)
  • International Softball Federation. There are news and stories from the I.S.F. Of course, the big talk in softball is how Australia and the U.S. teams will battle each other, following the upset at Atlanta in '96.
  Swimming (F.I.N.A.)
  Table Tennis (I.T.T.F.)
  • International Table Tennis Federation. Table tennis is not a permanent sport in the Olympics but it's been in before. Of interest at this site is the list of qualifiers and you may want to follow up results from world events and competitions. In relation to rules, the I.T.T.F. have policy statements on racket coverings and the ball (how many remember the sponge covering which was allowed many years ago?). Australia is part of the Oceania Table Tennis Federation and you may want to visit their site (www.ottf.org.au) for more local information.
  Taekwondo (W.T.F.)
  Tennis (I.T.F.)
  Triathlon (I.T.U.)
  • International Trialthon Union. There are Olympic profiles by country, rankings and the I.T.U. update. Keep an eye on results in the I.T.U. World Cup for performances.
  Volleyball (F.I.V.B.)
  • Fédération Internationale de Volleyball. On the opening page, scroll down to On the Road to Sydney 2000 for Olympic news or jump there now. You'll find details of the format of the Olympic competition, composition of the pools and drawing lots, and the match order. Both volleyball and beach volleyball are covered at F.I.V.B.'s site. You can find the Australian Volleyball Association at www.avf.org.au to see team membership and the latest news about Australia's teams.
  Weightlifting (I.W.F.)
  • International Weightlifting Federation. There's a news section, the world rankings for 2000 and details about the Olympics qualifying system. Unfortunately the site's text is black on a dark blue background so it's difficult to read (especially for tired eyes).
